Herbert J. Krapp, architect. Built by the Shuberts. Erected in sixty days, a record in 1921. It was leased by the Federal Theatre Project in 1937. It was used as a radio (later, TV) station from 1943 to 1965, with Alexander Woolcott broadcasting his Broadway commentaries from the stage. After being dark from 1965 to 1969, it was bought and renovated in 1971. Ten years later, Jujamcyn bought it, renovating it further in 1989. In 1990, it was renamed for critic-playwright Walter Kerr.

Commentaire:

Presse: "The mild-mannered musical adaptation of this movie, which opened on Monday night at the Walter Kerr Theater, is unlikely to stir similar passions...it is pleasant to look at, easy to listen to and oddly recessive. It neither offends nor enthralls." Ben Brantley for New York Times

"“Times are hard for dreamers,” the heroine observes. The same goes for audiences dreaming that this show would transcend, or even match, the movie." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Book writer Craig Lucas and songwriters Daniel Messé and Nathan Tysen are at pains to articulate a singable emotional center of the source while staying true to its careening, cinematic narrative. The two duties ultimately cancel each other out." David Cote for Time Out New York

"From the music to the staging to the cartoonish set design, it reeks of well-intentioned children's theatre." Roma Torre for NY1

"This grating stage musical takes the slenderest of romances and drowns it in cartoonish quirks in place of genuine warmth or feeling. And while Phillipa Soo is a creditable stand-in for the movie's uber-gamine Audrey Tautou, as a musical comedy heroine, Amelie Poulain is a dud." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"But the star is so bland here, she's not even Phillipa Soo. More than helpful, it's almost mandatory to have seen the movie if you hope to follow the erratic events of Craig Lucas's twee book." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

7) Falsettos (Revival)

Joué durant  2 mois 1 semaine

Première preview: 29 September 2016
Première: 27 October 2016
Dernière: 08 January 2017

Compositeur: William Finn •
Parolier: William Finn •
Libettiste: James Lapine • William Finn •
Metteur en scène: James Lapine •
Chorégraphe: Spencer Liff •
Avec: Stephanie J. Block (Trina), Christian Borle (Marvin), Andrew Rannells (Whizzer), Anthony Rosenthal (Jason), Tracie Thoms (Dr. Charlotte), Brandon Uranowitz (Mendel), Betsy Wolfe (Cordelia)

Commentaire: Revered musical Falsettos returns to Broadway in 2016 for the first time in 23 years. Helming this revival is the original co-writer and director James Lapine, who has three Tonys to his name and helmed the 2012 revival of Annie. Tony winner Christian Borle (Something Rotten!) stars as Marvin, with Andrew Rannells (Book of Mormon) as Whizzer and Stephanie J. Block (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) as Trina!

First performed on The Great White Way in 1992, Falsettos made for a thoroughly subversive Broadway show, exploring the all-too-recent AIDS crisis in the form of a wholesome song and dance musical. It was nominated for seven Tonys, taking home two awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Score, and remains a landmark of gay theater to this day.  (plus)

Presse: "There’s hardly a moment in the exhilarating, devastating revival of the musical “Falsettos” that doesn’t approach, or even achieve, perfection. This singular show, about an unorthodox family grappling with the complexities of, well, just being a family — unorthodox or otherwise — has been restored to life, some 25 years after it was first produced, with such vitality that it feels as fresh and startling as it did back in 1992." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"Plan on being deeply touched and richly satisfied at this show." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Few musicals have the range, idiosyncrasy and emotional punch of this profoundly unconventional and personal work." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"Finn brilliantly uses musical comedy to explore what constitutes a family, while humanizing the extensive tragedy of the AIDS epidemic." Jennifer Farrar for Associated Press

"A sweetheart of a show, tuned to perfection." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"This surprisingly fresh revival has been directed by original director Lapine, who plainly understands the bittersweet humor and provisional joy of that period. March on." Marilyn Stasio for Variety
